“Every person should have two pockets to use as the occasion demands,” said
the 18th century Rabbi Simcha Bunim, “in one is contained the words, ‘For my
sake was the world created’, and in the other the words, ‘I am but dust and
ashes.’”  Our human lives are marked by the constant tension between these
two poles of experience, between the yesh and the ayin – between the
“something” and the “nothing”.
